Raisa's Turn

By Alexander Tresniowski/Reported by Wendy Cole

What happens when the First Lady of Communism meets the
King of Capitalism? A book deal, that's what. The improbable
summit took place when Australian-born media mogul Rupert
Murdoch, who is chairman of Harper Collins' parent company,
stopped by the Kremlin to talk rubles and reprints with Raisa
Gorbachev, in need of a publisher for her autobiography. Such
high-level negotiating is rare in the book world, but the
personal touch worked--and Murdoch walked off with the rights
to publish I Hope: Reminiscences and Reflections, Raisa's
account of her childhood, her life with Gorby and, yes, her
run-ins with Nancy Reagan. The book is due in the fall.
